Blog Paper 3

In the text the mother’s language is different since she is speaking to her five year old daughter. For example, “no(.) too long grass in there”. This is irregular speech since it is improper syntax and it should be said, “no, the grass is too long in there”. This is an example of caretaker language since the mother tries to speak to the child differently in order for her daughter to understand. This is due to the fact that the daughter is only five years old and her language is in the post-telegraphic stage which means she is still developing. Another example of caretaker language is, “there might be creepy crawlies in there”. The mother uses the phrase “creepy crawlies” in order to describe the animals in the grass. This may be because the daughter uses hyponyms and “creepy crawlies” is the word she categorizes all the animals in the grass as. These all support the Language Acquisition System since the mother is aiding the child’s development by speaking a certain way and using different words. The child’s age also supports this system because it is to be used from ages two to five.

Daughter Raina’s language is still in development since she is five years old. Her age is apparent throughout the text since she overlaps her mother quite a bit throughout and also does not seem very confident in her speech. Many times she interrupts her mother and overlaps, “oh YES” which shows that she is not very mature and is still young. Throughout the text many of her lines of speech have words that are underlined which mean that she sounds stressed. This is another trait of younger children since their speech is not there yet and they are learning so much. With this large amount of new information the children tend to be less confident with it and sound unsure with their statements. Her grammar throughout is not terrible however, she does change her tone quite often. As well as sounding stressed she shouts often, “you’ve got a spider on your jacket(.) LOOK”. This links back with her learning new material and still developing her language skills. Another example of this is, “WHY(.) WHY(.)” , this shows how Raina is young and has a short temper. Her mother told her no and she shouted twice. Her saying the word twice is an example of a developing language since children this age tend to repeat themselves especially when experiencing heavy emotion

Another trait in the conversation that I noticed was the arrows which indicate that they are looking around the environment. This helps the child since it teaches her direction and also draws her focus to many different things. The daughter also points at things which can be an example of the Language Acquisition System since the mother is teaching direction while teaching the daughter about the different animals and the grass. The mother also uses disciplinary words such as her telling raina no or just simply saying, “RAINA”. This teaches the child what to do and what not to do and is vital for development.

Their conversation and actions support the Language acquisition Device since they are both interacting with the environment. Although they are not social and in public the child is being educated on new words and things in the environment through exploring and curiosity. For example, “there’s a little bird(.) i see it”. This helps the child learn by giving them different environments to explore and learn about.

There was a detailed understanding of the text but there was a limited reference to theories and theorists. You discussed hyponyms, Language Acquisition System and tone. I would have talked about more features such as adjacency pairs, deixis, Michael Halliday’s regulatory and heuristic functions of language. Also, try writing in smaller paragraphs since this keeps the reader engaged with the new features that are being discussed. You used appropriate quotes as support for your points and used them in a way that helped your text flow. Overall, I just think you need to separate your ideas into smaller paragraphs and don't repeat (I saw you discussed Raina’s mother saying “no” twice.)
    Score: 15/25

  2. Hello Joe,
This blog was very good. You had started instantly with your information and quotes which had brought you right into your analysis. You had done a very good job analyzing as you had very clear and precise quotes that you had fully explained. I do think that you could have done more of these points and possibly referenced another theory or two. I think that you have shown a clear understanding of the text and linguistic choices. For AO1 I would give you 3 marks. I also think that you have shown a clear understanding of the linguistic choices and child acquisition theory. For AO4 I would give you 7 marks. I also think that you had a clear analysis of the language data. For AO5 I would give you 3 marks. Overall that is 13 marks out of 25. Good job joe!

  3. AO1 : There was a detailed understanding of text with meaning, context, and audience. For example, “the mother’s language is different since she is speaking to her five year old daughter.” and “the mother tries to speak to the child differently in order for her daughter to understand.”. There was some effective references to characteristic features. For example, “irregular speech since it is improper syntax” and “which mean that she sounds stressed.”. This is worth 4 marks.

AO4: There is a clear understanding of, and appropriate reference to linguistic issues, concepts, methods and approaches. For example, “Many times she interrupts her mother and overlaps” and “links back with her learning new material and still developing her language skills.”. This is worth 7 marks.

AO5: There is limited and generally appropriate selection of language data. For example, “sounding stressed she shouts often, “you’ve got a spider on your jacket(.) LOOK””. However several of your quotes were considerably long, and I often found the explanations mirroring themselves repeatedly. Your paragraphs would’ve been more understandable or organized if they were condensed, and separated into multiple paragraphs. There was basic analysis of language data. However, there was some attempt to synthesize evidence from sources of language data. For example, “the Language Acquisition System” and “her language is in the post-telegraphic stage”
